Chance Is Not Freedom
Uncertainty is not openness.
Chance Is Not Freedom
Randomness is often invoked as the universe’s escape hatch. If outcomes are probabilistic, then surely possibility is wide.
This intuition confuses fluctuation with freedom.
Randomness in physics does not remove constraint. It operates inside it. A probability distribution is not an admission of anything-goes; it is a precisely shaped envelope within which variation may occur.
Radioactive decay is random in timing, but not in outcome. Thermal motion is stochastic, but bounded by temperature and interaction potentials. Quantum uncertainty enforces strict limits on conjugate variables. Even indeterminacy has rules.
Chance does not widen the space of what can happen.
It roughens the path inside a narrow corridor.
A particle diffusing in Brownian motion appears to wander freely. Place barriers around it, and the illusion disappears. It explores exhaustively only because the space is small.
The universe is not a roulette wheel.
It is a maze with most corridors sealed before movement begins.
Randomness does not create possibility.
It modulates what remains after elimination.
